God this was funny. I loved Marcus the gay hairdresser. He made the book. and of course sophies friends too.
The ending with Anatoly was kinda "off" have to agree with the other reviewer but it was good enough that i went and bought the next one in the series at 21.95 so that made it worth it,.

SEX, MURDER AND A DOUBLE LATTE was such a fun and engaging read! I could not put it down! It had had the perfect balance of suspense, humor and style. Not to mention a "hot Russian mystery man!"

Sophie Katz is the sassy best-selling author of numerous mystery novels. Her life takes a dramatic twist when she realizes that a crazed stalker begins playing out scenes from her own books! In edition to her own drama - she is convinced that the strange deaths of a famous filmmaker and a rap star have the same connections. Especially since both were killed in ways that mimic their own artistic works.

Sophie throws on her detective hat so that she can get down to business and figure out who's behind all of these strange occurrences. She zeros in on her two suspects - Anatoly - the hot Russian guy she's dating and Jason - one of her best friend's totally weird boyfriend (she's praying its Jason). I, unlike many readers, had no clue who the suspect was and was surprised when he/she was revealed. Ms. Davis certainly threw me for a loop!

With help from her best friends Mary Ann, Dena and her gay hairdresser Marcus - who all happen to be GREAT additions to the story - Sophie is prepared to crack the case ... But, not without her daily coffee fix of course.

I can't recommend this book enough! I didn't want it to end! Sophie was an awesome character that made the story come to life - the book was superbly written!
I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel - PASSION, BETRAYEL AND KILLER HIGHLIGHTS! I know I'm in for another enjoyable ride!!

5 stars!

At first I was going to give this four stars, because, for a first-attempt, it isn't that bad.
But then I changed my mind--it should be judged as a piece of literature, and not just as "a first novel".
So all in all, SMaaDL is only okay. As other posters have said, I think that the author tried a little too hard to make me laugh (which she didn't, anyway) and make her own writing seem hip and youthful, which was completely transparent.
As someone else also said, the supporting characters are completely vapid and described in simple terms. More dialogue, showing the actual PERSONALITY of the characters would have made this novel much more relatable.
The "romance" wasn't at all romantic (Sophie is obviously just a sex-deprived "loose" woman, and Anatoly is, well, a guy), and the entire plot was a little too...flat. It seemed as thought the coincidences were just TOO EASY, and the main character just took a while to catch on.

I actually put the book down and started on a Phillipa Gregory novel (now there's a page turner!) to relieve myself of the shallow world of Sophie.

This was a let down. I really looked forward to reading this book. When i got it i placed my current book i was reading by James Patterson(MARY MARY)down to read this one. The story started out very boring and from there it lost me. I think the author was try to hard to make this character hip and exciting. She failed. I read a lot of books and this was a fast disappointment. Sorry but the Lattes were more exciting.

This book was absolutely terrible. If you like mysteries, don't read this! Being a James Patterson fan, I thought this one would be a new and engaging because it would have a feminine side to it. The cover looked witty, but definitely deceptive. There were too many coincidences and plot was too impossible. It wasn't even funny because it sounded as though the author tried too hard being witty. Don't bother wasting your money or your time.
